The thief protested, but Falinda was unconvinced. The merchant's memory was as organized as a library shelf, and it remembered this face, twisted with desire for the very book in question. It remembered the same voice making promises it apparently had no intent of keeping.
Falinda is a character in Torment: Tides of Numenera.
Nearly every inch of this merchant's body is covered in tightly-wound robes and furs. A hood obscures its head, and a mask conceals its face. This doesn't stop you from noticing that it is apparently *furious* with you. Trembling, it bats at its similarly dressed companion. Both of them turn impassive masks back to you. It quickly turns out that the previous occupant of your body annoyed Falinda, borrowing a book ten years ago and never returning it.
Falinda consistently narrates everything around her, as it is explicitly not a human, but a construct. What others take for words is actually the passage of time. Falinda and Steristi are in love, and have been for many, many years. Falinda has never heard Steristi's voice.
