The Right To Exist is a quest in Torment: Tides of Numenera.
Synopsis[]
The resonance chamber has trapped me and all the other castoffs in the Labyrinth. The ghostly woman says the true Resonance is in the deepest part of my mind. I have to get there before the Specter if I want to decide the fate of the castoffs. The Specter is on his way to the Resonance. I have to get there first, to stop him from subsuming all our minds into his.
Walkthrough[]
The endgame begins. You appear in The Calm, which has grown a fifth side. You can decide between heading directly for the Resonance (first through the Endless Battle fathom), or saving your companions first. If you sent Rhin home, she will join you know - as an adult. Lady Anshe also appears, and after you dispel the shadows tormenting her, she gives you access to a stash of weapons.
To the bottom right, there are three Fathoms; the Crefton Fathom, Oasis Fathom, and Village Fathom. Each fathom will contain some surviving Castoffs, and a kind of monument which can be interacted with. The companions who were in your party during the mission prior (with the exception of Oom, who appears in his usual place in The Calm, there is a bug where he might not show up though), will also be distributed throughout them. They, and the Castoffs, will be tormented and trapped in illusions, which you can choose to free them from.
Oasis Fathom[]
This is the fathom to the left. It contains a Castoff named Efimpi who will explain to you that the other Castoffs (and your companions) are being tormented by illusions. He tells you that interacting with them with understanding might free them. Mazzof the Lost, can be found to the top left, and will give you the All-Burning Aura Cypher after being freed. To the top right, there is an Obelisk which can be interacted with using Anamnesis skill, and to the bottom right, there is Loyhan Stolls who is neither a Castoff nor one of your companions, but an illusion which believes itself to be real. He has a book of the Tides which you can read following a successful Persuasion/Deception, Quick Fingers, or Deception check, for some XP and Castoff memories. You can also convince him of his unreality for 4 XP, banishing him from existence, or let him be.
Depending on your active party members before being sucked into the Labyrinth, this Fathom can also contain Callistege, and Tybir and Auvigne.
Callistege is tormented by visions of her sisters. You can free her by interacting with her repeatedly. After being freed, she can choose:
- To become one with the Datasphere (making her unrecruitable);
- To become fully human again, OR;
- To delay her decision and rejoin your party or wait in the calm.
Tybir and a reflection of Auvigne are just above Loyhan Stolls, saying their farewells; after speaking with them, Tybir's Ring is upgraded to Tybir's Linked Rinks (with a stat bonus) and Tybir can rejoin the party or wait in the calm. NOTE: for Tybir to get a "good" ending, he must make up with Auvigine here.
Village Fathom[]
This is the fathom in the centre. If Matkina or Aligern were in your party before you entered the Labyrinth, they will be in this Fathom, tormented by illusions. If Tash survived until the end of the previous encounter, he will be fighting with Matkina. You can free them all from their illusions; helping Matkina or Aligern allows them to return to your party or wait in the calm. At the top of the map, there's a stone figure. Examining this figure and touching the symbols engraved on it reveals some lore, and pulling the symbol free grants 3 XP.
Crefton Fathom[]
This is the fathom to the right. This fathom contains Tol Maguur, the Castoff slaver who has a history with Rhin. You can:
- Use Intellect (Persuasion or Deception) to either convince her to free herself or to condemn her.
- Kill her or lash the shades with tidal energy.
If Erritis was in your party before you entered the Castoff's Labyrinth, he will also be present, battling with The Audience. You can either:
- Make him a hero - which will allow him to rejoin the party but condemn him to Audience's control, OR
- Free him from the Audience, causing him to thank you before leaving the Labyrinth - he cannot remain in your party.
The Philethis (Torment) from Sagus Cliffs is also present. If you previously used the Tidal Affinity to force it to answer you, it will simply say "Maroon" and then disappear. If you didn't use the Tidal Affinity, you can ask it a series of questions, which it answers in a typically cryptic fashion. You'll get some XP upon asking the final question. To the top right, there's a serpentine stone pillar you can interact with using Anamnesis for some XP and lore. Choosing to touch the statue deals 7 damage, but you'll gain the Recalescent Stone ornament.
- Once you're done, enter the portal to the Resonance. This brings you to the Endless Battle Fathom. Complete it to enter the First's Fathom and then the Broken Fathom.
- Now you're in the Dark Fathom again. The central door cannot be opened until you access the meres behind the other two doors, allowing you to relive key moments in the Changing God's life. The mere where you relive the moon and your birth is critical, as you need to ensure that your body makes it to the escape pod before the Sorrow catches up with you. Otherwise, it's game over, your whole life undone.
- Next comes the confrontation between the First Castoff and the Specter. You can fight on either side or, depending on what you learned and how you guide the dialogue, convince the Specter that it's nothing more than a backup. Not the Changing God.
- Access the doorway and enter the Resonance.
